GIVE CHILDREN IN HONDURAS THE GIFT OF WATER

€4100 OF €3000 REACHED

The primary school children in the village of La Montañita have no access to clean drinking water. Our goal: to build a well for them - by the start of the school year in February 2022.

Even though we have now reached our goal, you can of course continue to donate. We have many more projects planned and will ensure that your donation is used effectively to support the people of Honduras. Our administrative expense ratio is only 1.7%.

WHY DONATE FOR THE WELL CONSTRUCTION?

CONTAMINATED SOURCES

Dirty hands, stomach pain, disease: Daniél and his friends have no drinking water, toilets or washing facilities at La Montañita primary school. The problem: no adequate water source nearby.

Even in the local village, where people live in extreme poverty, there are only two water sources. These often contain bacteria and parasites. This leads to illness and many days of absence from school. And prevents the children from reaching their full potential.

BUILD A WELL,
GIVE THE GIFT OF WATER

The solution: We build a well for the school so that Daniél and his friends can finally drink clean, fresh water. To purify the water, we use a bio-sand water filter.

We have already built sanitary facilities for the school. These are just waiting to be connected to a water source. In workshops, the children will learn everything important about hygiene and health.

WATER CREATES OPPORTUNITIES

Water for Health.png

The well gives water, water gives life. This is true in many ways because the well provides Daniél and the other children of La Montañita with a better life in the following ways:

  • Their development is enhanced

  • They are better protected against diseases

  • They can attend school regularly

  • Their hygiene behaviour improves

  • They learn lifelong skills

BUILDING A WELL -
TOGETHER

Community.png

Just like many other parents, Rodrigo, Daniél's father, wants to help with building the well. After all, he wants to offer his children something he did not have: a future with possibility.

It is important for us to involve the community in the construction of the well because it ensures sustainable success.  Rodrigo, his children and the other families are happy that we are collecting donations for the well - and hope that construction can begin at the end of the year. Support them now with your donation.

FAQs ABOUT THE PROJECT

Will my donation be effective?

We are a small organisation and have extremely low administrative costs. Therefore, donations really do go towards the well. Currently, our administrative costs account for only 1.7%. This means that about 98.3% of your donation actually reaches the project. With other charitable organisations, that figure is often only 70-85%.

Can I get a donation receipt?

Yes, as an officially recognised non-profit organisation, The Opportunity Project gemeinnützige UG is authorised to issue donation receipts in Germany. We send them out by email upon request or at the end of the financial year.

How can I give this donation as a Christmas gift?

If you would like to surprise a loved one with a donation in their name, it is very easy: transfer the amount of your choice for the well construction here. Then download the gift template here. Fill it out, give it as a gift, done.

What is a well?
A well is a construction used to obtain water. It is made by digging a hole deep into the ground and then reinforcing the edges with cement and bricks. Thanks to an electric water pump, this well will provide access to running water for 30 students and 2 teachers from La Montañita primary school.

How deep does the well have to be dug to provide clean drinking water?
The well must be as deep as the groundwater. According to our calculations, in La Montañita this should be the case after about 10 to 20 metres.

How high are the well construction costs?
The well construction costs are about 3000€. With this amount, we pay for the materials, the engineer, some necessary tools and the transport to the village. In order to be able to cover the necessary costs, we depend on your help. No donation is too small.  For example, we can buy a bag of cement for 10€. The necessary water pump, for example, costs 75€.

How long does it take to build a well?

The construction of the well takes about one month. In order to complete the well by the start of the new school year in February 2022, we have to start the construction at the beginning of the year.

How does the well construction support the local economy?

We try to buy materials only from local shops in the communities, if possible. In addition, we involve a local engineer from the nearest town for the well construction.
