The aim of the initiative is to create incentives for children to go to school regularly and permanently.
Since one of the main factors for the low attendance is the malnutrition of the school children, we have set up school canteens. Children present now receive a free lunch every school day.

ACCESS TO EDUCATION
We aim to create incentives for children to attend school regularly and permanently.

As one of the main factors for low school attendance is the malnourishment of the school children, we set up school-based nutrition centres. Now, attending children receive a healthy meal every school day.

MEET SOFIA
Sofia, a primary school student from Majada Verde, looks forward to school every day—not just for learning but also for the warm lunch she gets there. At home, meals are often hard to come by, but thanks to The Opportunity Project, every child at her school has received a daily meal for the past three years. For Sofia, it’s another reason to attend school with joy.

We are aware that community involvement is crucial for the success of the Food for Thought Initiative. It increases the initiative’s acceptability within the community, enriches the initiative with additional local knowledge and gives the community ownership of and responsibility for the initiative. Therefore we are committed to involving the broader community, as well as the parents of the school children, in several ways.
DAILY MEAL PREPARATION

A group of selected parents manages and stores the food provided. In addition, the parents organise the preparation of the healthy and nutritious lunch and distribute the meals to the school children.

LINKAGE TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY
We try to buy as much food as possible from the small farmers in the area. With fair prices, we want to offer them and their families a reliable source of income and promote agriculture.
