Since one of the main factors for the low attendance is the malnutrition of the school children, we have set up school canteens. Children present now receive a free lunch every school day.

IN CONVERSATION: YARITZA TALKS ABOUT HER FIRST YEAR AT SCHOOL AS A SCHOLARSHIP HOLDER

Yaritza (14) lives in a small rural village in Honduras. After successfully completing primary school, Yaritza had no opportunity to continue her education.
​
For one thing, there is no secondary school in her immediate vicinity. Also, Yaritza's mother lacks the financial means to pay for the necessary school materials, school fees and transportation costs.

The aim of the TOP Scholarship Intiative is to offer ambitious children and young people from Honduras the opportunity to continue their education after completing primary school.

Since a lack of financial resources is the main reason why children are unable to go to secondary school, the TOP scholarships cover all costs that arise in the course of the school year.

HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN?
THE SCHOLARS
The scholars for 2022 and 2023 were selected based on a number of criteria including their motivation, ambitions for the future and the financial situation of their parents. In order to choose the most suitable scholars, interested children were asked to fill out a short application form. In this form we asked some basic questions such as:

What do you want to do with your secondary education?
What are your goals?
Based on the applications, the following students were awarded scholarships:

The cost of the TOP scholarship is around €400 per child per school year. This includes school fees, uniform, books and other materials, transport to school and a basic smartphone. The latter is crucial for learning success, as the school attended by the scholars only takes place on weekends. During the week, school work is sent via WhatsApp.
Making up 42.5%, transport to school accounts for the largest share of the total costs. This is because the secondary school is located in the nearest town, Talanga. Talanga is about 2 hours by bus from the scholars' communities. The long distance is one of the reasons why the children only have to be present at weekends.
